The Worst Foods for Braces

If you're getting treatment with braces, you're already familiar with the changes you've had to make to your lifestyle. Between brushing your teeth four times a day, carrying around a braces care kit, and getting used to using floss threaders, adapting to braces takes some doing. You also know that you've had to make some changes to your diet and avoid certain foods. But what are the worst foods to eat if you have braces? At HWH Orthodontics, we strive to be a comprehensive resource for orthodontic care – so here are our top 3 worst foods for braces.

If you have a habit of chewing on ice, it's time to put that habit to rest for the duration of your treatment. Ice may sound great for cooling down on a hot day, but all it takes is one misplaced bite for that ice to break brackets off your teeth and destroy your braces. Instead, keep the ice in your drink and cool down with a cold glass or water.

Popcorn makes it on the list because it's so deceptive. It may seem like popcorn is harmless – after all, it's kind of fluffy, right? Unfortunately, though, the fluffy kernels hide a sinister reality. The hard centers of popcorn kernels, as well as any unpopped kernels that you might not notice, can easily break off brackets. Even small portions of the seed can lodge themselves under your braces and cause damage. While you're getting treated with braces, it's best to leave the popcorn unpopped!

Caramels, and all other sticky candies, are doubly dangerous for braces. On one level, it's easy for them to get stuck to braces, and that stickiness can pull on the braces, potentially causing brackets to pop off your teeth or damaging your archwire. But in addition to damaging braces outright, stick candies can also harm your teeth. Caramels can stick underneath your archwire, and their high sugar content puts bacterial acid production into overdrive. This can cause tooth decay and cavities, derailing your treatment – so it's best to avoid caramels and all other sticky candy.
