The Benefits Of Adult Orthodontic Care

A smile you want to show off — that’s our goal!

A smile means everything. It’s your first impression, a way to express yourself. It can also affect your self-confidence and physical health. A straight smile for adults can have a huge impact on mental, emotional, and physical health.

Straighter teeth are easier to clean, resulting in less gum disease and jaw deterioration as you grow older. In addition to these health benefits, a beautiful, straight smile also provides many social, professional, and relationship benefits and increases your self-confidence.

Convenient Orthodontic Options For Adults

Every adult orthodontic patient will have different goals.

For some adult patients, their priority is to straighten their teeth discreetly. Others prefer to have the shortest treatment possible, while others want fewer office visits so they don’t take too much time off work. Whatever the case, the goals of our adult patients often differ from our teenage patients.

Whatever your goals, Wilson & Hendrickson Orthodontics has adult orthodontic treatment options that can work for you.

Think discreet! Invisalign or clear braces give you convenient, discreet, and effective orthodontic options.
Speed! Using advanced orthodontic technology like AcceleDent and Propel can shorten your treatment time by up to 40%.

What's The Difference Between Orthodontics For Adults Vs. Orthodontics For Kids?

Treatment may be different, but the results will be the same — a great smile!

Adults often have busier schedules than children, so one goal of adult orthodontics is to keep your office visits to a minimum. Your time is valuable, and we respect that.

The challenge to this is that adults sometimes include more treatment than children. Most kids get braces while their mouths are still developing, making it easier to treat them. Adults may need restorative care children don’t need, such as jaw restoration surgery, dental implants, or other repairs.

They also prefer more discreet options than metal braces for adults, which is why we offer Invisalign and clear braces for adult patients. This way, they can enjoy their smile throughout their treatment.

Adults also prefer to get their treatment done as quickly as possible, which is why we offer orthodontic technology aimed at doing just that.

What Are Some Common Orthodontic Problems Adults Experience?

Most people develop an orthodontic problem, also called a malocclusion or “bad bite,” in the course of their lifetime. Without treatment, these conditions can cause uneven tooth wear, increased vulnerability to dental decay, jaw problems, and a host of other issues. Most malocclusions can be grouped into a set of common orthodontic problems – all of which we can correct at our office through orthodontic treatments like braces and Invisalign.

Crowding

The most common reason for braces, crowding occurs when there isn’t enough room in the dental arch to accommodate the teeth. This causes the teeth to erupt crooked, making it difficult to clean the teeth properly and leaving them vulnerable to dental decay.

Underbite

Underbite occurs when the lower jaw sits in front of the upper jaw, usually due to a misaligned jaw. This can cause tooth wear and persistent jaw issues.

Overbite

The opposite of underbite, this occurs when the lower jaw sits too far behind the upper jaw. In extreme cases, it may cause the lower teeth to bite into the roof of the mouth.

Crossbite

This occurs when the jaw is misaligned, causing the rear upper teeth to sit inside of the lower teeth. Untreated, a crossbite can create uneven tooth wear as well as facial asymmetry.

Spacing

Spacing is the opposite of crowding, occurring when there is too much room in the dental arch for the teeth. This leaves gaps between the teeth that cause cosmetic and functional issues.

Open Bite

This condition occurs when the upper and lower front teeth don’t meet when the mouth is closed, leaving a gap or opening in the teeth. Often, the upper teeth are angled outward. It’s usually caused by childhood habits such as prolonged thumb sucking, although it may develop as a growth abnormality.
