Invisalign FAQs

Q. How much should I wear the aligners?
A. You'll have to wear the aligners for 20-22 hours per day, removing them only to eat, drink, brush, and floss.

Q. Do I need to avoid certain foods?
A. Not at all! Because you remove the aligners to eat, you can still enjoy all your favorite foods during treatment. Just be sure to brush your teeth and aligners before putting them back in your mouth.

Q. Will I have a lisp or a change in my speech?
A. As with all forms of orthodontic treatment, you'll likely go through an adjustment phase where your speech may be impacted slightly. This is quick, though, and will usually fade within a week - and the more you talk with the aligners in, the quicker you'll adjust.

Q. Does Invisalign hurt?
A. Invisalign isn't "painful," but many patients report a mild feeling of pressure or discomfort for a few days when they switch to a new set of aligners. Don't worry, though - it's mild, it passes quickly, and you can treat it with over the counter pain killers like Tylenol.

Q. Can I chew gum while wearing Invisalign?
A. Gum can get stuck in your aligners, so if you must chew it, please remove them to do so.

Q. Can I smoke while wearing Invisalign?
A. Smoking can discolor and warp aligners, so if you must smoke, you'll have to remove the aligners to do so. We'd recommend quitting altogether, however, and we're happy to connect you with resources to help.

Q. How do I clean my aligners?
A. Cleaning the aligners is easy - just brush them with toothpaste the same way you would your teeth every time you take them out and put them back in.

Q. How often will I need to have office visits?
A. We'll schedule you for appointments every 8 weeks or so, but we may change this number depending on your specific situation.

Q. What happens when I'm done with treatment?
A. You'll have to wear a retainer after the active phase of your treatment, but you're in luck - you can just use your last pair of aligners as your retainers!

Q. How long does treatment last?
A. This varies greatly from patient to patient, and your treatment time will depend on your unique orthodontic situation. In general, though, treatment with Invisalign usually lasts 6-18 months.

Q. Can children get Invisalign?
A. Absolutely. So long as all their teeth, including their second molars, have grown in completely, anyone is eligible to receive Invisalign. In fact, there’s a specialized form of treatment called Invisalign Teen that’s designed specifically for teenagers.

Q. What can Invisalign treat?
A. Invisalign used to be limited to only mild orthodontic conditions, but advances in the technology mean we can now treat a wide variety of malocclusions including overbite, crossbite, crowding, and spacing issues.

Q. Does it cost more than braces?
A. Cost depends on your situation and treatment time, so this varies from patient to patient. While Invisalign is usually slightly more expensive than braces for the same treatment time, Invisalign patients often require less treatment time than braces patients - so sometimes, the cost evens out.
