We aim to provide all of our patients with the utmost of personalized orthodontic care to give them a healthy and straight smile that will last a lifetime. We offer many different types of braces in order to straighten teeth in a way that suits your specific needs. It can be an exciting time for a patient to finally be able to remove the braces after a lengthy treatment, however, the entire orthodontic procedure isn’t done yet. The last part of orthodontic treatment with braces is the retention stage.

The Retention Stage

The retention stage of your development will begin after we remove your braces. After orthodontic treatment, most patients will have to wear a retainer for a period of time. You’ll have these new removable retainers made that will maintain the changes to your teeth if they’re worn as instructed. For approximately two years, we will continue to check on you as you wear your retainers. Our doctors recommend that you keep your retainers as long as you want to keep your teeth straight; your final orthodontic result will depend on your retainers. The length of this retention stage will vary in length based on a case-by-case basis.

Benefits of Retention

There are a number of benefits you’ll gain by wearing a retainer. A couple of these reasons as to why you should wear a retainer include the following.

  • Using a retainer will keep a patient’s teeth from shifting back into misalignment.
  • The usage of retainers can decrease plaque and bacteria in a patient’s mouth. Straightened teeth are not only easier to clean, but they also help a person chew better. This increases saliva production, which leads to a decrease in bacteria.
  • Retainers can improve breathing, which also can be helpful for curbing sleeping problems such as snoring.
  • Retainers can also help people fix their speech impediments.
